The 31-year-old reality star said it was 'not an easy decision' after filing for divorce from NBA star Kris, 26, after just 72 days of marriage on the grounds of 'irreconcilable differences'.
In a statement to E! - which screens her TV show - Kim said: 'After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision.
'I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.'
Kris, meanwhile, says he is devastated by Kim's decision, with TMZ claiming he only learnt she was divorcing him this morning.
'I'm committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents,' he said in a statement via his representative.
'I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce ... I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.'

Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humphries yesterday after just 72 days of marriage, but she is only believed to have made the final decision to split on Sunday night after a lot of tears over the weekend.
A source said: "She cried all weekend, deciding to file legal docs, then changing her mind several times over."
While Kim – who divorced her first husband, music producer Damon Thomas, in 2004 – wasn't initially 100 per cent sure her marriage was over, she was said to be "shocked and angry" to learn Kris had hired a Hollywood publicist to cope with the expected fallout.
She reportedly fumed: "He's not in f***ing Hollywood. He plays sports."
The 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star admitted she had hoped her marriage would last "forever", but the couple's short union had "not worked out as planned".

Kim has reportedly hired divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has previously represented Britney Spears, Maria Shriver, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds and will cite "irreconcilable differences" in her legal documents.

According to Us Weekly, the couple's assets will be divided in accordance with their prenuptial agreement.
Kim's assets prior to the marriage are said to all be protected, and she will also keep everything she earned during their short union.
Television network E! - which screens the Kardashian reality show - released a statement about the divorce.
MailOnline reported earlier this month how Kim and Kris's marriage had hit the rocks.
A source close to the couple told us just two weeks ago: 'I don’t know when they’ll announce the split or why they got married in the first place but they are done.’
'They are divorcing. Kim has been staying in a New York hotel which Kris has failed to visit.'
The couple have been dogged by persistent reports that all is not well between them for several weeks now.
